Post 169. A dog story we can learn from. March 31, 2025
Pic of the Week
Rocky is our rescue pup. He loves going to campus with us, and he’s a good smiler.

Tip of the Week
Rocky is our rescue pup, and we take him pretty much everywhere with us, including campus. People know him on campus now (he often gets comments and requests for pictures), and he knows his way around rather well. In fact, he’s already conducted several informal “campus tours” for guests.
A few weeks ago, we were going up an elevator and a group of undergraduate girls stepped into the elevator. As the elevator began moving, one of them looked at Rocky and said, “I wish I were as happy as that dog!”
Now, this was a rather sad statement, I thought. I have NO idea what this poor girl was going through, though I really appreciated her honesty. (It was around mid-terms, so everyone was pretty stressed-out). To lighten the moment, I just mouthed, “Me, too,” and the group of girls started laughing. Right then, the elevator opened, and we all walked out.
In a way, though, I was telling the truth. Dogs are incredibly happy-go-lucky most of the time (when they are well taken care of). And I really do think we can learn a lot from them. Namely, we can all find a way to be a bit “happier” by being grateful for something good around us in the moment. For Rocky, it was simply the fact that he was on his adventure on the FIU campus, going up an elevator. So simple, right?
What about you? When you are feeling weighed down by all your academic tasks, how can you pause to look around and find one thing you are grateful/happy about? I encourage you to try. Be more like Rocky. Take a deep breath, look around you for something simple to be grateful for, and smile.
